Course Content
While previous coaching experience may be advantageous, it is by no means a requirement. I have many years’ experience working with drivers of all levels, including those who are only just beginning to explore the principles of high performance roadcraft and circuit driving techniques.
Your course will likely explore, but not be limited to, the following areas:
- Driving psychology - Drivers who differ greatly in their road driving styles often respond in remarkably similar ways when placed in unfamiliar or demanding environments, such as a circuit or skid pan. Exploring these common psychological responses — the human condition, if you like — and better understanding your own reactions is a subject of particular interest to me.
- Observation and the human eye - Much like our psychological responses, our visual and physical behaviours tend to change in predictable ways when we approach the perceived limits of our skill or comfort. Understanding how and why this happens is fundamental to developing control and composure.
- Vehicle dynamics – When you turn the steering wheel, do you consciously consider the precise angle of the tyres, or do you simply turn until the car goes where you want it? For most people, it’s rather like being asked to explain how they tie their shoelaces — something they do instinctively, without conscious thought.
- Safer braking techniques from higher speeds - Emergency braking is often likened to bankruptcy: we understand the concept, yet quite rightly spend years developing skills intended to avoid ever needing it. When it is required, however, many drivers discover they lack the necessary experience. Paradoxically, we practise these techniques to such a high level that they reinforce the very point — you should strive never to need them.
- Cornering techniques – Is cornering simply a matter of turning the wheel until the car goes where you want it — or is something more nuanced taking place?
- Oversteer and understeer – Many drivers are familiar with these terms, but fewer are confident in accurately defining them, understanding how they are caused, recognising them early, correcting them appropriately and — most importantly — preventing them altogether.
- Electronic safety aids – ESP, DSC, DSTC, PSM, VSA, to name just a few. Ultimately, they are all variations on the same theme and, in my view, are best considered a grip overdraft facility — at least in the context of road driving. They are only required when grip runs out, and all have limited capacity. Working on reduced-grip surfaces, and selectively disengaging these systems within a controlled environment, allows a deeper understanding of vehicle dynamics and develops car-control skills at — and occasionally beyond — the limits of adhesion.
Who This Course Is For
This course is for drivers who are curious about what really happens when a car approaches the limits of grip — and who want to explore that territory with understanding rather than bravado.
It is particularly well suited to those who:
- Want to deepen their understanding of vehicle dynamics and handling in a safe, controlled environment
- Are interested in how road skills translate directly to higher-performance driving
- Enjoy learning through discussion, experimentation and reflection
- Own performance or prestige cars and wish to explore their capabilities responsibly
- Sense that there is more to discover beneath instinctive or habitual driving techniques
Previous circuit experience is not essential. Many clients arrive with little or no exposure to track driving, but with a genuine interest in understanding why a car behaves as it does — and how thoughtful inputs make all the difference.
Next Steps
If you are curious to explore the relationship between driver, car and environment in greater depth, a Performance Driving course offers the space and structure to do so. If this way of thinking about driving resonates with you, a conversation is the natural next step.
